This is the issue that Roberto Bolano sets up in his novel 2666. Not marble, nor the gilded monuments. The review of Bolaño's novel 2666, the part about Amalfitano (which is shorter than the first installment). The book is huge, almost 1,000 pages. Part of my four-day holiday weekend has been spent thinking about Roberto Bolaño's 2666. 2666 opens with a novel about four European literary critics, academics, who specialize in the work of a fictional German novelist, Benno von Archimboldi. The novel's cryptic title is one of its many grim jokes; there is no reference to this figure in its 900 pages. He was still working on it when he died in 2003. And this is probably why, out of all the 'books' in 2666, I liked Book II best. Roberto Bolaño's The Savage Detectives took the literary world by storm, and his latest posthumous release, 2666, is five times as long and ten times as ambitious.
